TOGETHER WE CAN!
It’s Time For Us To Stand Up As An Organized Group Demanding Proactive Change In Our Community!
JusticeOnChapelHill , Inc. is a community-led movement. Our Mission is to inspire South DeKalb residents to work together in reducing industrial pollution, protecting our natural resources and improving public health in our community. Our community has to come together in an organized manner to really solve these issues.
>3+ Billion
Gallons of raw, toxic industrial waste has gone through our community over the past 30+ years in defective sewer lines, with little if any oversight by DeKalb County. Recent spills are directly related to this problem.
10 & 25+ Years
The 10 Year Federal Consent Decree covers mostly North DeKalb County (roughly 75%). South DeKalb has most of the spills/issues & is under-represented in the Consent Decree. 25+ Years & DeKalb County still cannot explain how companies without permits sent deadly toxic waste through our community.
1,000s of
Menacing Vultures, attracted to the methane emissions at the landfill and toxic off-gassing in sewer lines, live in the area – constantly circling above homes, roosting on rooftops, and destroying property
WHO WE ARE AND WHY WE HAVE TO DO THIS
Who We Are
We are “Concerned Citizens” that started researching environmental issues in our community through the Emory Hercules Program. After trying to work with DeKalb County Commissioners and the current CEO it was clear that many of these politicians did not care as much about our community as we did. CEO Michael Thurmond told a group of residents to “SUE ME” in an April 11, 2019 meeting convened by DeKalb County Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson. He thought this was funny and kept repeating this and laughing at the residents.
What We Did
After talking to several DeKalb County Department Managers and meeting with DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond several members of the Chapel Hill Organization realized that various people in our county government were truly not interested in solving the issues facing our community. In fact many of these people are a major part of the problems our community face. In order to legally address these issues we organized as JusticeOnChapelHill, Inc. We plan to make CEO Michael Thurmond eat those words he told us in the April 11, 2019 meeting.
Upcoming Events
Community Air Quality Testing (Interior / Exterior)
Soil Testing for gardens and backyards
Responses to our Public Comments for the Consent Decree (It’s been over 8 months and they can’t answer the questions we presented to them”)
Block Party and Community Social Events (With Covid waning, we need to get to know each other as a total community. We are planning for events when it is safe for the community to fellowship and discuss common issues and concerns.
We are starting a search for a social media expert. We really have to get the real word out.
In A Nutshell
The Real Truth
DeKalb County has a long standing history of corruption and deception. There is a lack of transparency in government and the dialogue the County often times puts out to its citizens and the general public just does not add up.
Look at the Hard Facts
When you look at the data you will see that we have been living in a toxic environment that is affecting our health, quality of life, and diminishing our property values. Two of the primary reasons for this is a lack of oversight by the County and extreme corruption in DeKalb County Government. Especially as it relates to South DeKalb County. We have to hold these people accountable.
Organize For Proactive Change
An organized group is more effective than a thousand individual voices. Government officials want us to continue filing individual complaints which leads to a scattered approach for solving our problems. They count on individuals not following through, giving up, or getting frustrated which often times leads to no clear resolution to the issues at hand. This approach has not worked for our community. It is time for all the individuals and many activist groups in South DeKalb County to come together as one voice and DEMAND POSITIVE PROACTIVE CHANGE.
“For over 2 years we have been dealing with an extremely foul and odd odor…. This horrible smell is in our community, garages and homes… We can not sleep at night. lt has begun to make me and my family sick.”
